Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum – Begin Black History month with a vibrant community gathering featuring drumming, conversation, and cultural engagement. Residents are invited to meet the Committee Team, learn about upcoming events, and sign up for volunteer opportunities. February 2, 2026(1 event) – Come together for a vibrant celebration of Black Heritage Month. The event begins with the African Nova Scotian flag raising, followed by an inspiring gathering filled with art, music and community spirit. Enjoy powerful performances by exceptional local talents, Justin Reid and Alpha Kayondo. In addition to this event, Pattie Mon will serve authentic Jamaican-style patties crafted with premium ingredients and bold Caribbean flavours. February 7, 2026(5 events) – Celebrate Black History Month with a fun hands-on workshop for children grades 3-8. Registration required. Participants will decorate Puff-Puff a popular African treat with a variety of sweet additions and practice simple mixing skills to create fancy fruit drinks. Southwest Community Library – Shop local and celebrate culture, experience a vibrant marketplace featuring art, crafts and flavours from Black-owned businesses in our community. Guelph Black Heritage Society – Celebrate Black History Month by learning how to cook jollof rice a very popular dish across west Africa with chef Susan Tongun. Come together in a friendly cooking competition and learn the history of this iconic African dish. Event is cost free but registration is required and this is a 16+ event. Southwest Community Library – Join Host Gayle Smith from GWAN MOVE Black History Soca Program. This free program is an exciting educational initiative celebrating Black Caribbean culture in Canada. Engage in demonstrations of the popular GWAN MOVE Soca Drop, ensuring high-energy activities that will captivate audiences, making this event meaningful and engaging to celebrate black history month. Registration is Required, all children 12-years and under must attend with an adult. Pioneer Park Library – Awakened Voices Narratives presents two powerful performances featuring dramatic storytelling, first‑person historical monologues and dialogues, and ensemble work exploring the lives of Black abolitionists, early Black settlers, and the cross‑cultural alliances that shaped Ontario. Each performance includes a community Q & A and invited remarks from attendees. Featured Performers: Returning performers include J. Nicole Noel, Carlos Morgan, Kevin Heronjones, and Raechele Lovell, who will portray historical figures such as Viola Desmond, Marie‑Angélique Joseph, Mathieu Da Costa, Ida & John Little and Richard Pierpoint. New performers joining the 2026 lineup include actor/vocalist/musician, Samuel Soga, acclaimed spoken‑word artist Truth Is…, and veteran stage actor Peter Skoggard, who will portray Reverend William King and Nicholas Beaver, honouring the courage and compassion of those who supported freedom seekers in early Ontario. February 8, 2026(1 event) – Join us for an immersive, youth centred workshop exploring the Black Radical Tradition in Canada. A powerful history of resistance, creativity and community care often left out of classrooms. Together, we'll examine music, literature, art, fashion and grassroots movements that have challenged systems of oppression across the African diaspora. Through hands-on activities in visual arts, storytelling, poetry and public speaking, participants will deepen their understanding of abolitionist principles and learn how to apply them within their own communities. Enjoy a free lively presentation on the history of soca music, engaging in history and traditions of Trinidad and Guyana. Through demonstrations, storytelling and movement, participants will gain a deeper understanding of this influential cultural legacy. This event includes a Carnival Costume making session that is registration based, while the Soca Drip choreography workshop that follows is open to all who wish to join. February 17, 2026(1 event) – This Black History Month teachers and students in grade 4-7 are invited to join author Wanda Taylor to discuss her new middle-grade novel, A Recipe for Rhythm and Rescue. Hear Wanda herself as she brings to life Darla's journey to connect with her history and her community through her grandmother's recipe. A Q&A portion with the author will follow the reading. This free event is open to grade 4-7 classes and their teachers, support staff and parent volunteers. Education can register starting on December 8th, please only register one class per space. Join us during Black History Month for an evening of connection, reflection and celebration of our community's strength and vision. This gathering will feature live cultural performances, the sharing of key community insights and priorities and meaningful opportunities to connect with local leaders, families and organizations. Langs Community Health Centre – Join us for a free community electrifying event co-hosted by the Kitchener Public Library and Briana Phillips! Children ages 4-12 are invited to enjoy this unique program celebrating the history of African American arts and culture. The program will include an insightful storybook followed by a festival/carnival dance lesson, making for an authentic, engaging experience for children. Registration is required per child and opens January 12, 2026. All children must attend with an adult, only one accompanying adult per child is allowed. Using a historical artifact from Kitchener Public Library's collection, participants will examine the celebratory food ways of the Queen's Bush settlement, one of Ontario's most notable historic Black communities.
